LAHORE: Kulsoom, a 10-year-old Bangladeshi girl died at the Kot Lakhpat Jail on Monday after over a year of detention. She was sick and could not respond to medical treatment.

Kulsoom was the sister of Ramzan who is only six and is among the four minor Bangladeshi children who were smuggled to Pakistan for sale.

The others are Rashid alias Cheedi, 8, Imdad-ul-Haq, 9, and Kabir, 11.

All the four are at present serving one to two-year sentence in jail for illegal entry into Pakistan.

According to Mr Ansar Burney advocate, Chairman of the Ansar Burney Trust, who visited the District Jail on Wednesday, all the children were orphans and their relations were forced to sell them to a Pakistani smuggler, who wanted to seek higher prices for the unfortunate children either in Karachi or Lahore.

These children are among some 300 Bangladesh nationals who somehow or the other reached Pakistan. Most of them had to travel throught India. When they entered Pakistan, they were taken into custody by the police and illegal entry cases were instituted against them under the Foreigners Act.

Mr Burney told Dawn that he would take appropriate steps for the release and transportation to Bangladesh of the four children. He is also contacting the Bangladesh Embassy in Islamabad to help locate their relations.
