GENEVA, March 27 (PPI): Noted Pakistani human rights activist and former Federal Minister for Human Rights, Ansar Burney, has been elected unopposed as a member of the newly established United Nations Human Rights Council Advisory Committee based in Geneva. In accordance with United Nations Human Rights Council resolution 5/1 of 18 June 2007, the Human Rights Council Advisory Committee, elected 18 human rights activists from around the world by secret ballot. Ansar Burney has been elected unopposed for a term of three years as one of the members from Asia. The geographic distribution of members are as follows: five from African states, five from Asian states, two from Eastern European states, three from Latin American and Caribbean states and three from Western European and other states. Ansar Burney, who recently completed his term as Federal Minister for Human Rights, will now hold his previous position as Chairman of the Ansar Burney Trust International. He will also resume his various advisory positions along with the new position as member of the United Nations Human Rights Council Advisory Committee. The first session of the UNHRC Advisory Group will be held from 4-15 August 2008, a release said on Thursday.
