LONDON, June 12 (APP): The Ansar Burney Trust International has called on Pakistani authorities to convert all death sentences into life imprisonment and release such prisoners who have already completed their sentences but still remain behind the bars.
The Trust Chairman and former Minister in the caretaker government, Ansar Burney in a statement issued here claimed that a large number of prisoners in Pakistan facing death sentences are victims of faulty justice system and the best way was to change their sentences into life imprisonment.
He also appealed for the release of all nationals and foreign prisoners who have already completed their sentences and still await their release.
He cited the names of several Pakistanis as well as Indian prisoners who remains locked up even though the period of their sentences have long been completed.
Burney expressed confidence that both Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani and Chief Justice Abdul Hameed Dogar would take cognisance of the issue and order necessary directives to ease the plight of these prisoners.
