ISLAMABAD: The chairman of the Ansar Burney Welfare Trust International Ansar Burney on Sunday announced plans to visit India to meet the family of Sarabjit Singh, before filing his mercy petition with the president of Pakistan.
The Supreme Court of Pakistan recently upheld the verdict by an anti-terrorist court which had awarded the death penalty to Sarabjit Singh for his involvement in a series of bomb blasts in various Pakistani cities, including Lahore, Faisalabad and Kasoor in 1990. Sarabjit’s family say that he accidentally wandered across the unmarked border while drunk, and is innocent of charges of espionage and terrorism.
Ansar Burney said that after the public appeal by Sarabjit’s family, the Ansar Burney Welfare Trust International decided to undertake thorough investigations into the matter before filing the petition. He said that during his visit, he would meet Sarabjit’s family to examine its claim of his innocence. nni
